Questions about Travel Arrangements

Travel Arrangements – Global Debate Symposium

Families should begin to make travel arrangements as soon as you are confirmed to participate in the Global Debate Symposium. There are options to fly into the Denver International Airport or the Colorado Springs Airport. In either case, those making travel arrangements should schedule flights to arrive to the following airports within the following time frames for Colorado College transportation (arranged by the Global Debate Symposium) to be used:

Arrival – June 25, 2018

Denver International Airport – Arrival between 10 am and 3 pm

Colorado Springs Airport – Arrival between 8 am and 4 pm

Departure – July 8, 2018

Denver International Airport – Departure between 9 am and 3 pm

Colorado Springs Airport – Departure between 8 am and 4 pm

Departure – July 14, 2018

Denver International Airport – Departure between 9 am and 3 pm

Colorado Springs Airport – Departure between 8 am and 4 pm

If students arrive outside of the requested windows for arrival, those individuals are responsible for providing their own transportation to Colorado College/The Global Debate Symposium.

General Information regarding transportation

  • Students should expect the possibility of a 3- 5 hour wait in the Denver International Airport depending on the transportation grouping of the return departures. Our goal is to make every attempt to limit the time students wait in airports, but sometimes longer wait times are unavoidable. Global Debate Symposium Staff will be available for students that must wait in the airport.
  • All additional fees must be paid before students arrive to begin the summer program.
  • The Global Debate Symposium is not responsible for any travel related fees (e.g. luggage fees of any sort, missed flight due to student error, unaccompanied minor fees, etc).

Traveling as an individual- an individual participant not with a group either unaccompanied minor or traveling as adult student.

  • Families should first determine if a student traveling alone is considered an unaccompanied minor by the airline being used.
  • Any student considered to be an unaccompanied minor should make arrangements to arrive at the Colorado Springs Airport. A Global Debate Symposium fee of $200.00 will be assessed for any unaccompanied minor flying into Denver International Airport.
  • Any student considered to be flying as an adult can choose to arrive at Colorado Springs or Denver International Airport.

Traveling with a team- two or more people from the same school/area that opt to travel together

  • If a group of students have arranged to fly together, please communicate confirmed travel plans with GDS as soon as you have them.
  • If all students are unaccompanied minors, flight arrangements should be made to arrive at the Colorado Springs airport. You can expect a fee both ways from the airline.
  • If at least one of the students in a group can travel as an adult then all minors in the group can travel round trip with that student and no fee should be assessed by the airline. Please check to be sure of the age that is considered adult traveler as it is different with each airline.
  • If the adult student will not be returning with the group the unaccompanied minor student(s) will have a fee assessed by the airlines on the return trip and an additional $100.00 GDS fee if Denver International Airport is the departure airport.

Unaccompanied Minors traveling to the Global Debate Symposium

There is a slightly different process to follow if your child is traveling alone versus with a group of students from their school. In both cases it is extremely important to determine if students are considered unaccompanied minors (defined differently by every airline) or able to travel as an adult.

  • Any student defined as an unaccompanied minor by an airline should make arrangements to arrive at the Colorado Springs airport.
  • There will be a fee assessed of $200.00 for an unaccompanied minor arriving at the Denver International Airport.
  • On the day of travel to the Global Debate Symposium a parent or a responsible adult must be available by cell phone two hours after their Denver/Colorado Springs arrival time and two hours before Denver/Colorado Springs departure time in case of irregularities regarding any student’s flight.
  • Late arrival is only allowed with permission from the GDS Director. Students who opt to leave the Global Debate Symposium early will not be given a refund.
